Archetype's Exodus: A Deep Dive for the True Sci-Fi Aficionado.

For a specific breed of science-fiction enthusiast, the unveiling of Exodus stood as the biggest news from a prestigious gaming awards ceremony. Interestingly, those very fans may not have grasped its full significance during the initial showcase.

Exodus, the debut title from a freshly formed studio filled with ex- talent from a famous RPG developer, was originally announced a couple of years prior. At the latest event, the development team provided an targeted release window of 2027, accompanied by a spectacle-filled trailer. Prior to this reveal, the studio's leadership detailed some of the grounded scientific ideas that form the foundation for the game's universe: time dilation, biological engineering, and interstellar colonization. These are all inherently dense ideas, which are particularly difficult to convey in a brief, showy trailer.

“I would have preferred some of those intriguing and novel ideas were highlighted in the trailer. My takeaway was ‘standard man in space,’” wrote one viewer. Another replied, “The vibe I got was ‘this is like a well-known space opera RPG at home.’” Responses in community spaces were equally divided.

The trailer's approach clearly makes sense from a business standpoint. When trying to stand out during a hours-long deluge of game announcements, what has broader appeal: Scientists contemplating the finer points of Einsteinian physics? Or enormous robots combusting while more war machines emit energy beams from their faces? However, in choosing spectacle, the developers failed to include the quieter elements that make Exodus one of the more intriguing concept-driven games on the horizon. Let's explore further.

Evolved or Alien?

Does Exodus contain aliens? Yes. It depends. Recall that image near the start of the trailer, showing a being with gray-blue skin and technological components merged into their body. That was surely an alien, right? The truth hinges on your stance regarding one of the game's core philosophical questions: If you applied incremental change logic to the human DNA, is what is left still human?

“We want the Celestials... for a player who isn't spend large amounts of time into absorbing the lore, to still grasp the core concept that they're advanced humans, recognize that they’re an foe you have to confront... But also, importantly, make sure it's enjoyable and that they're impressive and that they are satisfying to challenge,” explained the studio's lead executive.

Grasping how these alien-seeming beings aren't by definition aliens requires wrestling with immense expanses of both the galaxy and time. Time dilation — the scientific principle that time moves differently for high-velocity objects — is an key core tenet of Exodus’ science-fiction trappings. Here are the basics: Humanity evacuates a dying Earth in the 23rd century for a distant corner of the Milky Way. Due to time dilation, some human colonists arrive ages before others. Those early arrivals extensively engineered their DNA and took on the “Celestial” moniker.

“There’s different levels of evolution. The people who reached the Centauri cluster first... had numerous millennia of years of evolution into the Celestials... They really see standard humans as fundamentally unevolved, beneath them, not really fit for the upper echelons of society,” stated the game's lead writer.

Exodus is set about 40,000 years in the future. Consider that immensity — that's essentially all of our documented past repeated ten times over. Now imagine what humans would look like if they spent ten entire human histories advancing the boundaries of genetic manipulation. You would not possibly recognize the outcome as human. You might very well believe you're observing an alien. The scariest branch of Celestial, known as the Mara-Yama, can take multiple forms. Some possess talons and appendages and stand enormously tall. Others are encased in chitinous shells. According to expanded universe lore, when Mara-Yama travel between stars, their physical forms can break down into little more than a fleshy blob attached to a head.

A Universe of Ideas

Between the detonations, beam attacks, and battle bears, you might have noticed snippets of otherworldly technology in the trailer. The protagonist, Jun Aslan, uses a chrome machine that emanates a violet glow. A spaceship accelerates into a portal and disappears at near-light speed. This all seems past human understanding, the kind of tech attributed to a Kardashev Scale-topping civilization. Yet, these are further examples of elements that seem alien but are firmly grounded in our species' own evolution.

Beyond the core development team, the Exodus universe is being crafted by what the narrative lead called a duo of “sci-fi giants.” One bestselling author has already published a lengthy novel set in the universe, with another planned, while another prolific writer has contributed a series of short stories. Incorporating such established science-fiction writers into the world years before the game's release has enabled the studio to develop a layered fictional universe as a framework for the game.

“It was really a collaborative effort. We had set some basics, and working with him, he would have ideas... and we would work to see how they all meshed... With someone of that caliber, you don't want to handcuff him. You want to give him room to explore,” the narrative director said of the collaboration.

One notable scene shows Jun seemingly manipulate the ground beneath him, creating stone into a makeshift bridge. This material, called livestone, responds to mental impulses from Celestials or Uranic humans — descendants of later human arrivals who were allowed limited technologies by the Celestials. Since Jun exhibits this ability, speculation arises about his nature.

“Jun's not exactly a Uranic human... Jun is sort of a modified version, for want of a better term,” clarified the writer, adding that the ability to interact with Celestial technology is a “key part of the game.”

The vast scale of the Exodus setting — both in distance and historical time — means there is ample room for various stories to coexist, using the same core lore without causing contradiction.

Stories Within the Void

Although Exodus has been on the radar for a couple of years and is still distant, several stories have already begun to be told within its universe. The first major novel explores the connection between a Uranic human and a woman whose ship arrived an aeon later than planned, making Celestials totally alien to her experience. An episode of a television series depicts a poignant story about a father chasing his daughter across star systems, with time dilation resulting in profound effects on their family; by the time he finds her, she has experienced a lifetime.

The game itself is centered on “Jun’s story,” set on the planet Lidon — a world largely left by Celestials that has become a bastion. A technological virus known as “the Rot” has begun corroding everything, including critical life support systems, and Jun must master his Celestial-like powers to {find a solution|stop
