The iconic performer Judi Dench has opened up about the impact of growing older on her eyesight and memory, stating she frequently finds it hard to recall immediate plans – but can effortlessly recite extensive passages of Shakespearean text. "I can't remember what I'm doing tomorrow, I promise you," she told the Radio Times. Her assistants confirmed that such reminders are at times necessary. Dench added that her age-related macular degeneration currently causes faces to appear "in a fog" even when up close. A 'Crusher' of a Condition "It's a crusher," she remarked, adding that it means she can no longer watching television. "I miss seeing Clive Myrie hosting Mastermind," she said, "however I can still hear the questions." The actress, celebrating 91 on Tuesday, is fronting a new documentary exploring her longstanding relationship with Shakespeare's works. She will also be seen in conversation with Kenneth Branagh in a separate show airing over the festive period. On Friends and Exoneration The star also discussed staying in contact with actor Kevin Spacey, who was found not guilty of assault allegations in 2023. "Kevin has been exonerated," she stated, "and I hear from Kevin, we text." Earlier this year, Dench disclosed she needs constant help in public to avoid falling over due to her failing eyesight. She was first diagnosed with the eye condition in 2012, a degenerative disease that is the primary reason of vision loss in the UK. Coping with New Realities She has credited the condition with her de facto retirement from film work. "I can't see on a film set any more," she said in 2023, adding: "Reading is also impossible. But you just cope." "It's challenging if I have a substantial role. I haven't yet found a way. Since I have so many friends who will teach me the script." Her last film appearance was a brief part in the 2022 holiday film Spirited; earlier that year she had a more substantial part in Allelujah. The same year also earned her her eighth Academy Award nod for Belfast.
