A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. This year will mark the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

The tournament indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
